Oakland Word's mission is to provoke dialogue and encourage creativity, literacy and self-sufficiency by providing opportunities for underrepresented youth and adults to write, publish and perform works about their lives.
Thanks to a generous grant from the California State Library, the Oakland Public Library is pleased to present Oakland Word, a special series of free creative writing and skills building classes, literacy events, and community performances. We will offer 14 multi-week workshops and 6 seminars, plus public readings and panel discussions, between February and April.
Through the Oakland Word program, we hope to provoke dialogue and encourage creativity, literacy, and self-sufficiency among Oakland residents, young and old, by providing them with opportunities to write, publish, and perform works about their lives.
Our team of experienced writing instructors will guide you through the process of writing and editing the poems and stories you have always wished you could express. All participants will have the opportunity to be published in an official Oakland Word book.
“You see, in my view a writer is a writer not because she writes well and easily, because she has amazing talent, because everything she does is golden. In my view a writer is a writer because even when there is no hope, even when nothing you do shows any sign of promise, you keep writing anyway.”
Due to the anticipated announcement of a verdict in the Mehserle trial, all Oakland libraries are now closed. Our book release is postponed until July 15, 6-8 pm at the Main Library.

Over 34 Oakland Word writers are featured in the upcoming anthology, to be released at our upcoming book release party on July 8 at the Main Library. This anthology includes poetry, fiction and memoir from:
As a poet, I feel I've been a little neglectful of poetry in Oakland Word's workshops. Bisola Marignay's popular spoken word poetry classes at Main were the only poetry-specific 5-week workshops during our February through April sessions. As we approach our final run of workshops, I've remedied this with two exciting new classes just on poetry -- one for beginners and one for poets of any level.
Oakland Word's fifth creative writing excerpt and Q&A comes from Tracy Held Potter. In this excerpt from "French Toast" a young woman tries to navigate her way through some of the awkwardness of a new relationship. Potter's entire story will be published in Oakland Word's anthology, due out in June.
At 72-years-young, James Eilers is the eldest participant in Oakland Word's free creative writing workshops. He attended the Poetry and Spoken Word workshop with instructor Bisola Marignay in February. In the following poetic vignettes, he skillfully paints impressions of two different moments in his life.
